Company:

MAG is the country’s largest airport group. We own Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands Airports along with MAG USA, a major airport services business based out of Chicago. Pre-Covid we were enjoying year on year growth with FY20 seeing MAG seeing revenue of £893m, driven by passenger numbers along with non-aero yields and increased cargo operations, contributing more than £3b to the UK economy. We see the post Covid world yielding the same after a 2-3 year recovery.

Role:

Reporting directly to the Group Financial Controller, you will lead a finance team of 25 people, including six direct reports. This is a critical role for MAG which holds finance & accounting responsibility for the entire group, including three UK Airports and MAG USA, which we have based out of Chicago.

MAG is an ambitious business, and you will be exposed to some very exciting projects, for example: growth of our international businesses, acquisitions and disposals and the development of one of the largest post war construction projects in Britain right here on-site in Manchester. Despite the cyclical process that you would expect in a role such as this, no two days are the same as you join a busines that is poised for business growth as we move into a post Covid environment.

From a more day to day perspective, you will take a leading role in driving the monthly close of the management accounts, including ownership and distribution of the month end timetable, recording of all transactions during the month, reviews of the numbers with the business prior to finalisation, and the reporting of month end numbers through Divisional P&Ls and Divisional Balance Sheets, with commentary.

You will be ensuring full compliance with the external audit in an open, transparent robust process during the interim process at half year, interim, controls testing, walkthroughs and full year, ensuring a clean audit.

We have a large and extremely talented team ranging from part qualified to experienced and fully qualified accountants. As such, this role requires true leadership that will inspire and support the development of the team through a mix of regular coaching, training and mentoring

Typical duties include (but not limited to):

  • Continuous assessment of the service being provided by the Finance & Accounting team to the business
  • Support other finance projects linked to MAG’s ambitious UK and international growth strategy,
  • Maintain the strong and professional culture across your entire team
  • Ensure that appropriate and relevant finance policies and procedures are in place across MAG to cover all key revenue, opex and capex cycles and financial systems.
  • Ensure that internal and external audit recommendations are implemented
  • Mentor and develop direct reports to support delivery of objectives.
  • Develop financial processes, procedures, and controls to support organic and inorganic growth plans.

You:

ACA / ACCA / CIMA qualified, with several years of PQE, we expect that you will already have experience working within a similar Head of Finance & Accounting role within a medium to large / complex (ideally multi-site) business. Whilst we don’t expect you to have managed large teams in the past, we do expect a level of gravitas and confidence derived from strong leadership skills. As such, you will be an accessible leader with the ability to inspire and motivate your team through regular contact, development, and communications. Similarly, you will be capable of influencing key senior stakeholders within the business.

We expect that you have a strong background in driving the closing of monthly management accounts for multiple business units, some of which being geographically disparate.

Candidates who have a good working knowledge of SAP systems will be of particular interest.
