Motor Transport Technician (Days) Role Summary: 

Working Monday – Friday on day shifts, in this role you will provide operationally critical repairs and maintenance for Manchester Airport and associated Customers Vehicles, Ground Support Equipment (GSE), Plant and Fixed Assets. You’ll prioritise workload to ensure standards and requirements are met and will accurately complete all associated paperwork, job cards, work orders, reports and information. You’ll be responsible for effective communication with a wide range of Team Members, Managers, Contractors and Customers.


A day in a life of a Motor Transport Technician (Days):

  • Ensure that all vehicles and equipment airside are operating within the rules of the Civil Aviation Authority and the MAN Airport Aerodrome Manual.
  • Ensure that all work is carried out safely, efficiently, cost effectively and in compliance with current legislation, policies and procedures, including assessing priorities and allocating work to other team members and monitoring effectiveness.
  • Carry out inspections, services, investigations, diagnostic fault finding, repairs and modifications across the full range of Customer’s vehicles, GSE plant and fixed assets within prevailing safety, legislative, quality, cost parameters, performance standards and KPIs.
  • Attend breakdowns, principally but not exclusively, on the airport (Landside and Airside) within performance response times and legislative procedures.  Diagnose all fault types using experience coupled with either on board or plug in technical diagnostic systems, carry out repairs on the full range of vehicles, GSE, plant and fixed assets.
  • Prepare estimates in a timely, cost effective and accurate manner.
  • Prepare all vehicle types for Department of Transport MOT. Ensure that inspection, service and repairs are completed for the appointment time and date. On delivery of vehicle test, liaise with examiners and technical officers as required.
  • Record accurately and completely all management information and data required for the preparation of service records, invoices, accounts, reports, investigations, business efficiency and customer requirements using the appropriate systems.
  • Achieve and maintain competence and product knowledge through training and reading of product trade publications and manuals. 
  • Fully comply with all Road Transport Regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with all Safe Systems of Work, Risk Assessments and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.


What will make you successful as a Motor Transport Technician (Days):

  • NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds Vehicle maintenance & repair or BTEC National Certificate in vehicle repair & technology
  • Experience working with i.e. (HGV/PSV/Plant), light vehicles and Ground Service Equipment.
  • Extensive experience of Hydraulics, Pneumatics and Auto Electrics.
  • Proven competence with the full array of servicing and maintenance tools and equipment and familiarity of associated Oils and Lubricants.
  • Must be comfortable with lone working in austere conditions and have the confidence to make time critical decisions in a high tempo environment.
  • Excellent analytical skills to diagnose problems and make decisions about the most suitable repairs.
  • Good interpersonal skills to convey with clarity technical information regarding repairs to both management and customers.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • HGV and Fork Lift Truck Licence would be an advantage.
  • IT Literacy is essential to operate digital diagnostic equipment such as Roller Brake Testers, Smoke/Gas Analysers, Telematics and for data entry on MAN administrative (MPS), training (Airdat), safety (safeport)  and logistical (Tranman) systems.
