THE ROLE

This is a 12-month fixed-term secondment position responsible for maintaining a safe and secure airfield environment to support aircraft operations. The role ensures that all regulatory and internal airport requirements are consistently met, while actively protecting the integrity of the Critical Part (CP) of the aerodrome. Airfield Security Rangers play a key role in both safety and security, contributing directly to the efficient and secure operation of the airport.

The primary purpose of the role is to ensure that the airfield environment remains safe for aircraft operations at all times. This includes conducting daily inspections of the airfield and designated areas to identify hazards, pavement defects, or any non-compliance issues. The postholder is required to report any incidents, safety concerns, or irregularities immediately to the Airfield Safety and Compliance Officer, while also supporting efforts to maintain a clean and safe environment free from Foreign Object Debris.

A core element of the role is maintaining airfield security through the prevention of unauthorised access to restricted areas. This is achieved through the implementation of a continuous, random patrol regime across the airfield, including perimeter roads, access gates, and other restricted zones. The role requires vigilance in verifying the validity and correct display of personnel and vehicle access passes, as well as ensuring that any breaches or incursions of airport security procedures are immediately reported. In addition, the Ranger must ensure that all aircraft parked within the Critical Part are properly secured when not in use.

The role also involves managing and controlling access to airside areas. This includes overseeing vehicle access and egress within designated zones, escorting contractors and individuals without full airside access, and facilitating the movement of airport security personnel between locations. The postholder is responsible for ensuring that emergency services are safely escorted to incidents via the most direct and efficient routes, maintaining safety and operational continuity during critical situations.

Airfield Security Rangers are required to respond promptly and effectively to emergencies in accordance with the airport’s emergency plan and departmental procedures. This includes providing operational support during incidents, ensuring access routes remain clear, and maintaining situational awareness throughout the response. The role may also involve supporting aircraft movements, such as towing operations, by ensuring areas are safe and maintaining appropriate surveillance until aircraft are positioned securely.

An important aspect of the role is maintaining accurate and detailed records of all activities. This includes logging patrols, inspections, vehicle and pass checks, escort duties, and any incidents or breaches that occur. All documentation must be completed accurately and submitted to the Airfield Operations Duty Manager for review in a timely manner.

The postholder must also maintain a high level of professional competency through ongoing training and assessment. This includes completing required certifications such as Level 1 Security training, undertaking role-specific training, and participating in both overt and covert competency checks. Adherence to all Standard Operating Procedures, security protocols, and regulatory requirements is essential.

Overall, Airfield Security Rangers are accountable for upholding the highest standards of safety, security, and compliance. The role must be a proactive and vigilant approach, ensuring that all airfield activities are conducted in accordance with established procedures while supporting the safe and efficient operation of the airport.
