The Role
Reporting to the Head of Air Traffic Services, the Training and Standards Manager leads the delivery and assurance of all ATC training, standards, and competence activities. You will oversee the Unit Training Plan (UTP) and Unit Competence Scheme (UCS), ensuring compliance with EU Regulation 2015/340 (UK retained), CAP 1251, CAP 700, and CAA requirements.
You will lead training and standards personnel to ensure controllers remain competent and operationally effective, while acting as the main liaison with the CAA on licensing, competence, and training. The role also supports the ATC Manager and Head of Air Traffic Services in maintaining high professional and safety standards.
What will make you successful in the role?
- Strong knowledge of CAA regulations (UK retained EU 2015/340, CAP 1251, CAP 700, ICAO) and their application to training, competence, and licensing
- Proven ability to lead and develop training/standards teams, including OJTIs and Assessors
- Licensed ATCO background with solid operational experience
- Strong commitment to safety, embedding SMS principles and a Just Culture
- Ability to analyse performance data, assessments, and investigations to drive evidence-based improvements
- Excellent communication skills, engaging effectively with CAA, airport leadership, and ATC teams
- Proactive approach to improving training quality, competence assurance, and organisational effectiveness
Technical Qualifications
- Valid ATCO licence (UK Aerodrome)
- OJTI qualification
- Extensive ATC experience (tower and/or approach endorsed)
- Experience delivering, managing, and evaluating ATC training programmes (OJTI, refresher, continuation)
This is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the training, standards, and competence of the Air Traffic Control workforce at East Midlands Airport, providing strong professional leadership while ensuring controllers are fully trained, competent, and compliant with regulatory requirements.
