About the opportunity

London Stansted Airport is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Apprentice, who will develop into a knowledgeable, fully-fledge Grounds Maintenance Operative (post-qualification). The individual will support maintenance of the landscaped infrastructure, carrying out landscape maintenance to the highest standard and observing best horticultural practices. As such, you will ensure the green estate around the Airport is maintained and scheduled maintenance programmes as directed. Work is generally based outside and undertaken throughout the year, so apprentices will need to work in all weathers. This is a ‘hands-on’ role covering a range of practical tasks, with specialist skills being learnt through progression. 

 

Typically, our apprentices attend College one day per week during term-time and work for their employer 4 days per week. During your college day you will develop your underpinning knowledge and then your learning will continue with on-the-job training in the workplace, with regular support visits from your Training Officer. The level 2 Apprenticeship takes around 20 - 24 months to complete; however, the timescale is flexible and will depend on the successful candidate’s prior experience. 

 

During the course of your two-year apprenticeship, you will attend Writtle University College - one day a week to learn about: 

  • Business (inc. policies, visions, values and commercial pressures);
  • Communication (inc. the importance of clear communication, different mediums of communication and their use);
  • Health & Safety (inc. regulation, legislation, policy, procedure and the responsibility of employees);
  • Environment (inc. waste and waste reduction, environmental best practice and prevention and control of local pollution incidents);
  • Plant growth (inc. how to control vegetation, nutrition and plant requirements, the principles of germination and why, when and how to cultivate soils for differing purposes);

And more… 

 

 

Formal and informal training over the two years will incorporate:

  • Safe Handling & Application of Pesticides Certification (PA1);
  • Handheld Applicators on Land Certification (PA6A);
  • Chainsaw Maintenance and Crosscutting (CS30);
  • Felling small trees (CS31);
  • Operating tractors with auxiliary equipment such as Toppers; and
  • Operating powered grounds maintenance machinery.

 

 

Who we're looking for

  • We are looking for a passionate, personable and knowledgeable person who is happy to work as part of a team or on their own;
  • You will have a high energy and can-do attitude;
  • We would also expect you to have strong organisational and interpersonal skills, as this will support your success at MAG;
  • You must be able to deliver on time, and to the highest standard;
  • Airside driving is a key part of the role; therefore, you will need a Full UK Driving License to apply for this apprenticeship;
  • Finally, you'll have resided in the UK for the last three years, this is so we're able to obtain the applicable security clearances on your behalf.
