The role
Manchester Airport Group is looking for a skilled Engineer to join our Infrastructure team. This is an exciting opportunity to work within one of the UK's largest and most complex airport environments, supporting the critical communications infrastructure that keeps our airports, partners, tenants and airlines connected.
You'll be responsible for the installation, testing, maintenance and fault resolution of fibre optic and copper cabling systems across Manchester Airport's extensive communications network. Working on both planned project delivery and operational support activities, you'll play a key role in ensuring our infrastructure remains reliable, scalable and ready to support future growth.
This role offers the opportunity to work across a large-scale estate that includes approximately 300 communications rooms, 10,000km of optical fibre, 40,000km of copper cabling and more than 30,000 structured wiring outlets.
Your Responsibilities Will Include:
- Planning, installing, terminating and testing structured copper cabling and associated containment systems including trunking, cable tray and conduit.
- Installing, terminating and testing single-mode and multi-mode fibre optic cabling, including ducting, containment and patching requirements.
- Completing installation, testing and fault-finding activities on voice multi-core cabling systems.
- Diagnosing and resolving faults across copper and fibre communication networks using specialist testing equipment.
- Supporting adds, moves and changes on live operational systems while maintaining agreed service levels.
- Producing and maintaining accurate installation records, plans, capacity information and job documentation.
- Carrying out infrastructure surveys to support capacity planning, audits and future project delivery.
- Undertaking inspections of communications rooms and installations to ensure compliance with required standards.
- Supporting delivery of infrastructure projects as directed by the Installation Manager.
- Maintaining appropriate stock levels and reporting shortages when required.
- Following all relevant health, safety, operational and technical procedures while working within a busy airport environment.
What will make you successful in the role?
We're looking for someone with strong technical expertise in structured cabling and communications infrastructure, alongside a proactive and customer-focused approach.
You'll ideally have:
- Demonstrable experience in the planning, installation, testing, patching and fault-finding of structured copper and fibre cabling systems.
- A City & Guilds Award in Communication Cabling, Certificate in Designing and Planning Communications Networks Level 2/3, or equivalent qualification.
- A valid CSCS Card.
- Experience working with structured cabling technologies and systems such as ADC-Krone, Systimax, Emtelle and Brand-Rex.
- Knowledge of network and telephony connectivity, including fault diagnosis and rectification.
- Experience using OTDR and FLUKE testing equipment.
- Competence working with blown fibre systems and associated equipment.
- Krone/Systimax accreditation (desirable).
- Lucid accreditation (desirable).
- IPAF and PASMA certifications (desirable).
- Experience working to technical installation standards and engineering specifications.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to build effective relationships across technical and operational teams.
- A commitment to delivering high standards of customer service, quality and safety.
